Basseterre, St. Kitts: Minister of International Trade, Industry and Commerce Dr. Timothy Harris has expressed fear and concern that if the economy does not improve, there will be more job losses in the country.
The minister was speaking in light of the pending severance of some 20 workers from the manufacturing firm, Electrofab who he said received formal notice of the company’s intention to sever their services within the next two months. WINN asked the minister what the government could do to bring relief in the short term for unemployed persons.
In a statement issued Friday, Dr. Harris said he appreciated that many businesses reduced labor hours/days with a view to maintain employee levels, but said under employment cannot lead to a long run solution, as workers become demoralized over time if they are unable to satisfy their basic needs.
