Charlestown, Nevis (Curtis Morton): The Empire Sports Club based in Hanley’s Road Gingerland, celebrated its 33rd year of existence recently with a series of activities. The celebrations climaxed on Sunday 25th November with the launching of its official website at the Charles Walters Community Center in Hanley’s Road.

The brief ceremony was chaired by Mr. Eric Evelyn, long serving President of the club.  Also on hand to address the gathering, was long time supporter of the club, Hon Vance Amory, former Nevisian cricketer and Area representative who congratulated the club for its continued service in the community and for guiding the youths in the right direction.

Mr. Quincy Prentice, former club member who constructed the website free of cost, gave a demonstration for all present.  This was made possible compliments of Caribbean Cable Communications Ltd which provided internet connections for the occasion.

According to a post on the site:

The site ‘highlights the philosophy, work, achievements and activities of the club during its 33 years of existence.’

President Evelyn invited persons to ‘follow the rich history of the club since coming into existence in 1979, at which time it was known as the Empire Cricket Club.  You are invited to savour the personal sporting achievements of our members as we continue to enjoy the respect of being the leading sporting organization on Nevis.

The club emerged from humble beginnings in Hanley’s Road where it is based, as a mere cricket organization dedicated to improving the cricketing skills of members, to now a fully fledged community organisation  aimed at not only honing sporting skills of members but seeks to improve the community at large. We welcome you to enjoy our website and we do invite your constructive comments.’

The feature article on the site is entitled ‘Empire’s brightest star lights up Asia-enters the record books’ and highlights the recent achievements of club member, Kieran Powell. The site also features a listing of current and deceased members and information for interested persons as to how to become members. Information is also available on some of the club’s major achievements, including community projects. The Empire Sports club has established itself as one of the most successful sporting entities on the island of Nevis.
