England (ESPN): Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney has taken to Twitter to dismiss newspaper reports that he could leave the club, calling them 'nonsense' and 'absolute rubbish'. Rooney, currently facing up to two months on the sidelines with a badly gashed leg, was said to be surplus to requirements at United and it was suggested Sir Alex Ferguson was ready to sanction a £40 million transfer.
But the England striker has rejected claims that he will be leaving Old Trafford, tweeting: "Read the nonsense in the papers and heard what people have to say.absolute rubbish. #heretostay." Rooney was strongly linked with a move away, likely to Manchester City, in October 2010 but eventually pledged his future to the Red Devils and signed a new, improved contract.
After a poor performance in the defeat at Everton, Rooney was only a substitute for United's 3-2 win over Fulham on Sunday, when new signing Van Persie was preferred as the main striker. The England international came off the bench only to sustain a heavy gash to his right leg, ruling him out for a minimum of a month, while Sir Alex Ferguson was reported to have lost patience with last season's top scorer. Rooney joined from Everton in 2004 and has scored 182 goals in 368 goals for United, making him the fourth-highest scorer in their history.
