CCJ, Port of Spain. The Right Honourable Sir Dennis Byron, President of the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) will be attending the Commonwealth Law Conference, set to take placein Melbourne Australia from March 20th to the 24th. The CCJ President, in his role as Chairman of the Commonwealth Judicial Education Institute, will be the patron of the Commonwealth Chief Justices’ Meeting during the conference.

The four-day conference, being held under the theme ‘Thriving in a global world: building on the rule of law’, will cover issues including cybercrime, migration, child protection, the growth of the Asia-Pacific region and the future of the legal profession. The CCJ President stated, “for most of my judicial life I have championed two things – increasing the use of technology in courts and the importance of education for judges. This conference will be attended by some of the finest minds in the legal profession and I welcome the opportunity to share some of the knowledge that I have gathered and to learn from others.”

The CCJ continues in its own efforts to increase the use of technology in Courts and to champion judicial education. Earlier this year, the CCJ rolled out an electronic court management system, CURIA, that offers an e-Filing platform, a case management module and a court performance monitoring tools. Curia has the added advantage of being online so that it can be accessed anywhere. The software was debuted to attorneys and representatives from Caribbean judiciaries attending the Caribbean Academy for Law and Court Administration’s (CALCA) 4th Biennial Conference, held in St. Maarten, in October 2016. CALCA, the educational arm of the CCJ, brings together legal practitioners, and other professionals, from the common law and civil law jurisdictions to discuss current, cutting edge legal issues at its conferences.

Additionally, this year the 5th Biennial Conference of the Caribbean Association of Judicial Officers (CAJO) will have their conference, from September 28-30, at the Renaissance Curaçao Resort. The Honourable Mr. Justice Saunders, a Judge of the CCJ, is the Chairman of CAJO.

The CAJO conference brings together the region’s Chief Justices, Judges, Magistrates, Masters, Tribunal Members, Registrars, Executive Court Administrators and many other Judicial Officers for judicial education and for discussion aimed at finding solutions to regional issues.
