Police To Charge Man In Connection With Murder Of Canadian Citizen

CASTRIES, St Lucia, Nov 26, CMC – Police are expected to lay charges against a 26 year-old man in connection with the death of a Canadian citizen who was also robbed.

Colin Peter and his wife were walking on a beach near their resort nearly two weeks ago when he was robbed and beaten. He later died in hospital and Prime Minister Dr Kenny Anthony described the death as “an extremely tragic one.”

Peter, 75, was here gathering information and documentation on his ancestor, William Peter, after whom the William Peter Boulevard, in the center of the capital was named.

Police Commissioner Vernon Francois is quoted in the Canadian media on Monday as saying that a suspect had been held on Sunday.

“He was taken into custody and has since cooperated with law enforcement in terms of recovering some of the items belonging to the gentleman in question. I’m confident we should be able to charge him with murder,” Francois said, adding that law enforcement officials have recovered a camera stolen during the robbery.

Police said the man is likely to appear in court this week and described the murder as a “crime of opportunity” insisting that St Lucia is a safe destination.
