St Kitts and Nevis (WINN): WINN FM understands that Police were set to continue visiting communities on Monday by going to McKnight. The walk-throughs are part of the community policing initiative currently being undertaken by the St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force. Officer Lauston Percival is part of the team of police officers that are interacting with residents in the various communities as part of the effort. On a recent edition of Voices, he explained what the strategy entailed.
“We had a meeting with the Commissioner of Police and officers were selected to be a part of the initiative, along with the Permanent Secretary of National Security and this team was put together and headed by Inspector Rosemary Isles-Joseph. And what it is the officers are going out there in the communities speaking whether one on one, to a group, knocking on persons doors and speaking to them to find out what the police can do to assist in their communities, speaking to young persons trying to find out why the young persons in the federation are behaving the way they are behaving and whatever feedback we get from them we note it and we try to see if we can act on what we got.”
Officer Percival said that they have already visited several communities around the island. They are sometimes accompanied by a member of the Department of Probation and Child Protection Services and Dr. Neals Chitan who is described as a Crime Prevention Specialist.
“We have persons assigned to areas and sometimes you will find the whole team comes together and do a general walk-through in a particular area. For instance we went to Molineux/Phillips’ and then we went to the Pilgrim church in Molineux and Dr. Chitan did a session with some persons from the congregation there.”
WINN FM was present in Molinuex during that walk-through. We spoke with residents in the area and asked them what they thought about the police’s efforts?
