Ferry terminal

Press Release

Basseterre, St. Kitts (Traffic Department):  Bus Operators and owners are advised that effective August 1st 2012, the Police will be enforcing the provisions of Regulation 39 (4) of the Vehicles and Road Traffic Regulations, which states as follows, “No passenger bus shall stop to allow passengers on or off except in such areas as designated by the Licensing Authority.”

These designated areas are identified by Bus Stop signs at strategic points along the bus routes in Basseterre.  You are further advised that there should be no parking or waiting at these designated areas. Drivers of private vehicles are warned that it is an offence to park or wait at these locations, and are advised to refrain from doing so to avoid penalties. The penalty for non-compliance is $100.00 if ticketed or up to $3,500.00 if convicted by a magistrate.

The full cooperation of both drivers and passengers is solicited.

Most of the bus operators exhibit a mutual respect for each other, but there are a few who are very discourteous to the other operators. I have personally witness some operators blocking the exit just to get a few more passengers. I understand that one would want to maximize their resources, and leaving with a full bus is economically prudent, but respect has to be commutative.
