Charlestown, Nevis (WINN): Four former Culturama Kaiso monarchs are among seven calypsonians moving on to next weekend's Senior Kaiso Finals.
Former Monarch I Soursop scored the highest in Friday night's semi-finals, garnering 628 points. Another former monarch, and the youngest person to ever win the senior title, Inspirer, scored 627. Two multi-title holders placed third and fourth: Dis n Dat earned 623 and Astro 620.
Also moving on to the Finals are Pupa Wheeler, who garnered 620 points, newcomer Enforcer who earned 602 points, and Nutsy who earned 592.
The other participants in Friday's semi-finals were Alamoulou (590), Baker (589), Big Lice (585), By Surprise (557), Polo (522) and Wingie (484).
The results were released via text message by the Chairman of the Culturama Committee Halsted "Sooty" Byron in the early hours of Saturday morning.
"Thanks to all for participating," Mr. Byron said in his text.
Only about a hundred persons are estimated to have attended the semi-finals at the Culturama Complex in Charlestown on Friday night, a number of whom had journeyed from St. Kitts for the show.
The poor turn-out led one calypsonian to ask what was becoming of Nevis' one-proud calypso tradition. Speaking to WINN FM Saturday morning, he speculated that current political tensions had dampened the Culturama spirit.
The Kaiso competition is already mired in controversy over the selection of a St. Kitts band, Grand Masters that was chosen as the house band for the event. Nevis' Kasanova Band says they were expecting, as they had been last year, to be given the gig. But organizers say due to the late release of songs by the artistes it felt from past experience, that the more-seasoned Grand Masters were better able to prepare the performers in the shortest space of time.
Reigning Kaiso Monarch King Hollywood will defend his crown at the Finals slated for next week Friday (August 4).
