Armed men rob Scotia Bank

Commissioner of Police speaks with Assistant Commissioner Ian Queeley

Basseterre, St. Kitts (WINN):  Two armed men robbed the Bank of Nova Scotia in Bird Rock, on the outskirts of Basseterre Friday morning, making off with an undisclosed sum of money.

“Police and other detectives have responded in various areas, and we will be utilizing all the resources at our disposal to capture the perpetrators of this crime...we’re pursuing all leads possible,” Assistant Commissioner of Police Ian Queeley, told reporters on the scene.

He said investigations had indicated that no one had been injured during the robbery but confirmed that a number of people were traumatisized by the incident, and were taken away by emergency medical personnel.  The ACP said he could not confirm at the time if they were staff or customers.

Minutes after the 11:35 a.m. incident, police had cordoned off the parking lot shared by the bank and other businesses in the complex.

Patrons who were parked in the lot were told by the Police Commissioner that they could not leave until the area – now a crime scene – had been processed by investigators.  They were later allowed to leave using an alternate exit at the back of the building that houses the bank.

A large lumber yard across the road from the Complex, was also cordoned off by police and officers were posted on its perimeter, following reports that the robbers may have scaled the 10-12’ wall of the premises in fleeing the scene.
