Tabernacle, St. Kitts: Agro-processors on St. Kitts are crying out for their own facility and financing to fund their operations. Minister of agriculture Dr. Timothy Harris and officials from the Department of Agriculture toured sections of the agriculture sector on Thursday, focusing mainly on the agro-processing. Two agro-processors from Tabernacle expressed a desire to have a central facility where they can create their products, as currently they are operating from the confines of their home.
Mrs. Loretta Patrick is a farmer and agro-processor in Tabernacle. She produces dried fruits, namely gooseberries and guava cheese, which is packaged and labeled locally and sold mostly in Tortola, British Virgin Islands. As a farmer Mrs. Patrick grows her own crops and raw material where she produces her agro processing products and get help from the community who provide her with the gooseberries for her production. In the same community, Roberta Rawlins produces several variety of jams, ice cream, bag drinks, ice pops, guava sauce and other fruit related products. She too is appealing for a central location where her produce and those of other agro-processors can be manufactured.

Meanwhile Registrar of Department of Cooperatives Clyde Thomson, who was also present on the tour, spoke of the initiatives of the St. Kitts Farmers Cooperatives in support of agro-processors. WINN FM in the coming days will present more stories as it relates to agro-processors and the agriculture sector tour in future newscasts.
