Criminologist: Diagnose before prescribing

Gang graffiti

St. Kitts and Nevis (WINN):  Gang violence problems are not all the same from community to community or from nation to nation and they need to be diagnosed before an action plan is finalized, this according to criminologist Dr. Edward Maguire.

Speaking Tuesday at a forum to discuss Gang Violence on St Kitts and Nevis held at NEMA headquarters, the criminologist said in Trinidad the hotspots were mapped before visits were paid to communities.  He said solutions have to match the problem and it is important understand the cause of the problem.

Dr Maguire, who is also a Professor and Chair in the Department of Justice, Law and Society at American University, focuses primarily on police organizations, violent crime (especially outbreaks of violence), and social science research methods.
