CMO gives advice on ''Dirty Dozen'' list of produce

EWG 2012 'Dirty Dozen' List

Basseterre, St. Kitts (WINN):  St. Kitts and Nevis' Chief Medical Officer is urging the public to ensure that imported fruits and vegetables are properly washed before they’re eaten.

Dr. Patrick spoke to WINN FM Monday morning about the Environmental Working Group’s ''Dirty Dozen'' list of produce with unacceptable pesticide residue.

The EWG’s 2012 "Dirty Dozen" List comprises:

Apples

Celery

Sweet bell peppers

Peaches

Strawberries

Nectarines

Grapes

Spinach

Lettuce

Cucumbers

Blueberries

Potatoes

Dr. Patrick Martin said there could be tell-tale signs if one inadvertently ingested pesticides, but said the rule of thumb, is simply to wash what you eat.  Washing fruit and vegetables with water and hand soap he said, was enough to remove any traces of pesticides.

Making the updated 2012 "Clean Fifteen" List because they were found to be lowest in pesticides are:

Onions

Sweet corn

Pineapples

Avocado

Cabbage

Sweet peas

Asparagus

Mangoes

Eggplant

Kiwi

Cantaloupe

Sweet potatoes

Grapefruit

Watermelon

Mushrooms
