St. Kitts and Nevis (WINN); As the Ministry of National Security continues its rollout of the national CCTV surveillance project, cameras have been installed in Shadwell and Conaree.

Minister of National Security, Prime Minister Timothy Harris gave an update on phase one of the $5 million-project during Tuesday’s (May 23) convening of the national parliament.

“We have procured the necessary installation equipment as well as training, and these of course are being undertaken by one of the largest and best firms in this area, Vivotek. The Vivotek project in St. Kitts and Nevis is being facilitated by local CCTV expert Mr. Errol Wilkinson.

“All of the equipment and furniture for the first phase, which involve Basseterre and its environment among other areas have been supplied and the CCTV cameras have already been installed at Shadwell and in Conaree. I want to thank the residents of those areas for their support in ensuring that they do all that they can to support the project and maintain the peace and safety of their environment.”

The Prime Minister assured that other areas will be covered with CCTV cameras as the project continues to be built out.

“The program, of course, will continue its build out over the upcoming weeks. We already had in February exposed some six individuals who will be providing technical support during the training exercise.”

In December 2016, as part of its continued assistance in the area of security, the Taiwanese government provided the government of St. Kitts and Nevis with the $5 million to purchase equipment and fund training for the CCTV project.

Prime Minister Harris described the financial assistance as a huge and invaluable investment that will go a long way in saving lives, in acting as a deterrent to crime, and in providing certain investigatory resources that the police need at this moment.

Phase One of the CCTV project will be covering the Basseterre area, Frigate Bay and its environs.
