Basseterre, St. Kitts (WINN): The recent poor pass rate of English Language at the CXC level regionally is a concern of resident Judge in St. Kitts and Nevis Justice Errol Thomas. Speaking in his address at the opening of the new law year recently, Judge Thomas believes this issue is a wider societal concern and can impact the future of the legal profession.
Judge Thomas believes the poor results are due in part to the jargons used in instant messaging and popular culture. Recently, the St. Kitts Teachers Union recommended that specialist English and Math teachers be placed in the primary school system to tackle the issue of slipping performance in those subjects at the CXC level.
President of the St. Kitts Teachers Union Bishop Ron Collins said while the Union was pleased with the national overall pass rate of 78%, there was cause for concern with those two subjects. According to Minister of Education Nigel Carty, the pass rate in English Language in St. Kitts and Nevis this year is 58.3% down from 83% in 2011. He said the education ministry will seek to uncover the variables which led to this significant slippage.
