St. Kitts and Nevis Passes Controversial Banking Act

Thursday 30th July, 2015 Hits:65 Local Clive Bacchus

St. Kitts and Nevis (WINN):  The House of Assembly at close to 3:15 Wednesday, after two days of debate, passed into law without amendment, the Banking Bill 2015 which seeks to reform the region's banking sector to give more regulatory muscle to the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank (ECCB ). Critics of the Act have expressed concern that only the ECCB will determine whether a license is granted, can revoke that license , veto the appointment of directors, and will command the proceeds of the annual license, thus removing control of the banking sector  from the Finance Ministers of individual territories.  Speaking in...

St. Kitts and Nevis (WINN):  The strategy of the St. Kitts and Nevis Labour Party Opposition is being questioned by political analyst and pollster Peter Wickham.  According to Mr. Wickham, the party and its leader are under the impression that they did not really lose the February 16th General Election and the Team Unity Government will not last for five years.  “The style of opposition suggests to me that the Labour Party is convinced that they did not lose the election, the Labour Party is convinced that they have done nothing wrong, and the Labour Party is convinced that the best way...

St. Kitts and Nevis (WINN):  The Team Unity Administration was accused Tuesday of delaying bringing to Parliament the ECCB Banking Act of the sub-region.
